I am exploring the
intersection between figuration, expression and abstraction to illustrate my desire to escape the oppressions of my personal
history, experiences, perceptions of society, and current events. I choose to suspend most of my work from the ceiling,
as opposed to showing it on a pedestal, wall or floor. The “hanging” is a symbolic reference to the self-imposed
and/or social immobility resulting from my experiences in the world. The main materials I use – plaster, burlap
and paper pulp – represent the sensitive nature of emotions. These “industrial” materials are typically
not used as finish, but rather as raw materials which are quite vulnerable to external elements.
